The TN227 yields more than twice the pages of the standard TN223. For regular color printing, the TN227 delivers a meaningfully lower cost per page.
About the DR-223CL Drum Unit
The TN227 / TN223 toner cartridges work with the DR-223CL drum unit (sold separately). The drum unit typically lasts through multiple toner replacements most users replace toner 3–4 times before replacing the drum.
Note: When the printer prompts "Drum End Soon" or "Replace Drum", replace the DR-223CL drum unit, not the toner cartridge. This pack contains toner only your existing drum unit stays in the printer.
How to Install Brother TN227 / TN223 Toner Cartridges
- Open the front cover of your Brother color laser printer
- Pull out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly for the color being replaced
- Press the release lever and slide the old toner cartridge out of the DR-223CL drum unit
- Remove the new cartridge from packaging and shake it gently 5–6 times side to side to evenly distribute the toner
- Remove the protective cap completely do not leave any tape or film on the cartridge
- Insert the new cartridge firmly into the DR-223CL drum unit until it clicks
- Reinsert the drum and toner assembly back into the printer and close the front cover
- Repeat for each color as needed, then print a test page to confirm correct installation
Do not touch the drum roller. Fingerprints can cause permanent print defects on the drum surface.
If print density appears light: Remove the cartridge, gently rock it side to side to redistribute toner, reinstall and test again.

What is the difference between TN223 and TN227
Both fit the same printers. TN223 is standard yield (~1,300–1,400 pages); TN227 is high yield (~2,300–3,000 pages). The TN227 delivers a lower cost per page for regular printing.
Does this include the drum unit
No. This pack contains toner cartridges only. The compatible drum unit for these printers is the DR-223CL (sold separately).
